Songlines is a film about music, and the incredible ability of music to transcend language, distance and culture to connect us, human being to human being, through the sharing of our common stories. Filmed between 2015 and 2017, Songlines documents an unusual and unprecedented cultural exchange between two musical greats from different sides of the globe.Legendary Argentinian folk musician Jaime Torres and celebrated Indigenous Australian musician and composer, William Barton are both renowned for their use of traditional instruments in contemporary musical settings. Songlines follows these two musical innovators, along with Torres’ band and some of Australia’s most highly regarded Indigenous musicians, Archie Roach and the Pigram Brothers, on an unforgettable journey.
A poignant and candid exploration of friendship, connection, and healing, Songlines reminds us that we are more alike than we think – that despite our differences, or maybe because of them, we must let our stories unite us.
Two marvelous instances of the road shooting along the trip.
Jaime Torres and Philip Roe exchanging in the forest of western Australia.
From the brightly lit stages of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, to the raw, red beauty of the Kimberley, and the rugged, soaring peaks of the Argentinian highlands, Jaime and William cross continents, exploring each other’s lands, cultures and stories. Music is their common language and it’s a language that prevails when words are simply not enough.
Songlines tells the stories of love and loss, of community and family, of Australia’s stolen generation and Argentina’s Disappeared. It captures not only the mutual passion and artistry of these two incredible musicians, but also the deep and lasting bond they forge through the music they make, the people they meet, and the stories they share.
